Session Configuration Screen
You can start monitoring session for each connected Serial Device, just click on the device and select the way you want to display monitoring data in session configuration window. You'll be able to add up to 10 visualizers for each monitored Serial Device.
Installed Serial Devices
On the left side of Device Monitoring Studio main window you will find a list of connected Serial Devices in the Serial Configuration Window. Device Monitoring Studio allows you to view device's properties and manage actions.
If you are going to monitor device that is not currently connected, you can select "Next Connected Device" entry to monitor this device activity after it is connected to the system.
Serial Device Information
This tool window displays the information for the selected serial device. You can scroll the contents of the window to view the whole information if it is larger than window. Use the keyboard or mouse to select the text in the window and select the Edit|Copy command to copy the selected text into the Clipboard.
Request View Visualizer - Basic View
This visualizer displays all monitored packets, including PnP packets, data transfer packets and serial input/output control code packets. All monitored data can be displayed in one of two schemes - Basic or Complete. In Basic scheme, only general information about a packet is displayed.
Request View Visualizer - Complete View
In the Complete scheme full packet information, including the binary data attached to the packet is displayed.
Packet View Visualizer
This visualizer window consists of two parts. The top part displays monitored packets in a table. For each packet the following information is displayed:
- Data (Characters)
The bottom part is build from the following visualizers: Request View and MODBUS View. Click on any packet in the top part to see it decoded by each visualizer in the bottom part. Click on the tab to switch to the visualizer.
Data View Visualizer
This visualizer contains two panes. The top pane displays that was read from the device, and the bottom pane displays the data written to the device.
Сonsole View Visualizer
This visualizer works as the text console, showing all the received data as ASCII characters.
Line View Visualizer
This visualizer displays the state of the serial/modem control lines. The following lines states are displayed:
- RTS Request to Send line indicator
- CTS Clear to Send line indicator
- DSR Data Send Ready line indicator
- DCD Data Carrier Detect line indicator
- DTR Data Terminal Ready line indicator
- RI Ring line indicator
The Playback Tool Window consists of the following elements:
- Log File Path Combo. Displays the folder path where the system searches for log files. Click on the combo to see other variants or press the Browse button to specify another folder. By default, this combo contains the same folder as specified in Tools|Settings, Recording Tab.
- Browse Button. Press to open a Folder Browse dialog to specify the folder where your log files are located.
- Recurse Subdirectories Button. Press to enable recursion when searching for log files.
- Log Tree. Displays all log files (located in selected folder and subfolders), their contents, sorted either by device or by creation date. To view detailed information about a session or a stream, move your mouse over the item to see the description.
To create a log file playback monitoring session, select the stream and click on it. The Session Configuration window appears. Select visualizers and specify the Playback Settings, such as time range and time scale. Once you are ready, press the Start button.
During playback the progress bar appears in the status bar area. You can use this progress bar to track the progress of the playback.
During playback, if there is a long delay in the recorded stream, the Next button appears in the status bar. Press the Next button to skip this delay. In "Stepped" time scale mode, the Next button should be used to step to the next packet.
You can also play back the whole session, stream by stream. To do so, right-click on the session and select "Play Whole Session" option.
This Monitoring Session type represents the virtual bridge between two distinct serial devices connected to two computer serial ports. The devices must be connected using the so-called null-modem cable.
Serial Bridge Configuration Window
This window allows you to configure the bridging between two computer serial ports. It consists of two groups, called New Bridge and Existing Bridges.
Existing Bridges group lists all bridges you created since you started the Device Monitoring Studio. Each bridge may be in one of two states - running and stopped. When you create a new bridge it is in Stopped state by default.
Click on the bridge in the Existing Bridges group to open the Session Configuration window. After you click the Start button in the Session Configuration window, the bridge enters into the running state.
Serial Device Data Monitoring Statistics
This visualizer displays the following counters:
- Packets Total/Sec
- Bytes Total/Sec
- Bytes Read/Sec
- Bytes Written/Sec
- IO Packets/Sec
Bottom part of the visualizer displays the variable statistics. For each variable the following is displayed:
- Variable Name, line width and color, visibility flag. Click on the checkbox to toggle variable on or off.
- Maximum value
- Average value
- Last value
Serial Device Data Monitoring Statistics Extended
You can toggle each variable visibility by clicking on the checkbox next to variable's name. You can also change the variable's color, line width and scale by double-clicking the variable to display the Variable Properties dialog.
Click anywhere on the plot area to place a check mark (a so-called Static Line). After you place a static line, you will see the momentary values for each variable at the top right corner of the visualizer.
If you hold a Ctrl key while clicking on the plot area, you place a tracking line, which is bound to the data and does not move.
To remove either the static or the tracking line, click on the far right part of the plot area, just under the lines' informational area.
Serial Terminal module implements the serial terminal, which is built into the Device Monitoring Studio user interface.
You can configure as much serial terminal sessions as you need, with a maximum of one session for every serial device installed on your computer. The Serial Terminal supports various serial port settings, including baud rate, parity, flow control, etc.
MODBUS View Visualizer
MODBUS View visualizer parses MODBUS protocol requests and responses.
MODBUS View visualizer is compliant with MODBUS APPLICATION PROTOCOL SPECIFICATION V1.1a. There are several different implementations of Modbus Protocol. Different companies implement and document their own specific extensions to Modbus Protocol. Function and command names could vary: for example, Preset Single Register command in one implementation equals to Write Single Register command in the standard.
MODBUS Packet Send Window
MODBUS Packet Send window provides a really easy way to control a MODBUS-compatible device. It can come of great help when you need to debug your device, for example verify its responses. You can set all parameters for any standard or user-defined MODBUS function visually and then just click on the Send button. Result rollout will dynamically reflect the changes you make.
MODBUS Requests and Responses
It is convenient to use a MODBUS View visualizer in conjunction with a MODBUS Packet Send window for two-way debugging (to view both requests and responses).
Serial Port Monitor Scripting
Scripting module adds its own tool window to the application user interface. It hosts loaded scripts and allows you to create a new script, load an existing one, edit a script and execute it. When you execute a script, the script window turns into the script console window, where all error messages and script output is displayed. The script continues execution until it is stopped using the Scripting|Stop Script command.
Serial Port Raw Data View Visualizer
The visualizer displays data sent to a Serial device and received from a Serial device in two separate windows. Visualizer provides a lot of customization options to make output as easy to use as it never been before.
Both layout and appearance can be also configured for your convenience.
